I thought this kit seemed a little silly, after all the baking soda/vinegar volcano is pretty much the simplest of all science projects, but my daughters loved it. The volcano is very cool It's a plastic mold and you create the bombs to go in it and then when you're ready, you trigger the reaction with the liquid. It's super fun to watch it jump out and come down the side of the mountain. The mountain is very easy to clean, so even after we ran out of the "lava" it came with, we were able to make our own and use the volcano. Overall, they loved it and were so excited to use it again and again!

I got this kit for my youngest son (he's a special needs kiddo, age 9), as well as for my oldest niece. They had a blast with this for hours, and it was a great learning experience for creating perfume-like scents like a scientist. There's an easy-to-follow booklet that outlines how to create various concoctions. All tools and items needed to make them are included with this set, as well. No need to go hunting around your house for extra stuff to do this. There's a decent variety of scents to work with (such as peppermint, eucalyptus, jasmine, rose, etc.), and they're all pretty yummy and wonderfully scented to create fabulous perfumes and gel potpourri. After they create something from the instruction booklet, the more adventurous kiddos may have even more fun with tweaking the "formulas" to create even more interesting scents (my favorite part). :) Although this is a really fun set, it is definitely involved with several steps, and the recommended age of 8+ is there for a reason. Most younger kiddos, unless they're really super-mature and can read/follow precise instructions ahead of their time, will probably not be a good candidate for using this without further guidance from an older sibling or adult. Even at age 8 and above, an adult should be present. You'll need a good work space for their "creations" as it can get messy, and if spilled, this stuff can stain - so make sure you're well-prepared. Overall, this is a super fun and educational kit for kiddos who love hands-on experiments, and who also love scents. We had a lot of fun with this so far, and I would definitely recommend it for 8+ kiddos who enjoy these kinds of activities. Makes a great gift, too!

This is a lightweight, fairly small box that has a lot to it. My daughter loves to make soap and mix oils. This simple kit offers the basic scents of eucalyptus, jasmine, peppermint and rose. You can't go wrong with those scents. The instruction book leads one through various creations and smells. They provide simple tools, e.g., syringe, scoop, vials, tweezers, mixing pot, red color, labels, atomizer perfume bottle, sodium polyacrylate crystals, and stirring sticks. The kids, stated 8 and older with supervision, can make perfumes and potpourri. It works. Smells nice and fun. (Careful about getting those scents spilt everywhere. Coloring may stain, too. Watch the little ones and have a special work area.)

This is a fun STEM kit that's on the simple side - our 5-year-old needed help, but not much. Anyone of reading age should be able to complete the whole thing entirely on their own. This kit makes little soaps that look like baked goods - cookies, cupcakes, macaroons, etc. The project itself is relatively short - it took us about two hours working slowly - but the finished products look great, and have a purpose. Kids will learn many kitchen skills as well - stirring to look for consistency in the mixture, the vision and patience to look for setting molds, loading and using a piping bag. All told, one of the best kits we've finished.

This kit is really for older children, ages 8 and up. It contains small parts and chemicals. It is imperative to follow instructions. I still think that any child or children using this are best supervised. Never allow the chemicals or the water needed for the projects to come in contact with any part of the body. It is a good teaching tool that will spark if not ignite an interest in crystal formation and crystals in general. It has an aesthetic component in that many young users are drawn to the colors of the geodes. I think it is a good idea to use this as a teaching tool that is also fun and interesting and learn about crystals with the child or children using this.

This is a fun little science experiment kit. It comes with citric acid and sodium bicarbonate for chemicals and then food coloring, and a soapy solution. It also comes with a mold for "lava bombs" (though you don't really need to mold the stuff into a solid ball; it works fine with as a powder), a volcano and mineral springs mold, where you can do the experiments, googles, gloves, a small beaker, small scoops, three stir sticks, some paper, and pH strips. The instruction booklet that comes with the kit has several different, but related, experiments that kids can do with the materials included. The instructions are easy to read and follow. I also like that there are question and explainers for the young scientists asking about the results of their experiments, why they think those things happened, and also ask kids to predict what will happen. It also provides the answers to the questions in the booklet. It's a great introduction to science for young kids. Older kids can probably do the experiments by themselves, as everything in the kits is pretty harmless, those citric acid can burn if it gets in a cut. It's best to supervise your kids and if you want to do the stuff with younger kids (like 4 or 5) you should definitely supervise and help them measure things.

I got this for my 13 year old daughter and we went through the first 1/3rd of it together. I asked her opinion, and this is what she had to say, in her own words: "I am 13 years old, and even though this kit is for younger girls, I still really like it. In this set, you can create perfumes and gel potpourri. The process is kind of complicated, but not too hard. Helpful and straightforward, the instructions are clear and easy to follow. The kit provides all the necessary ingredients -- sodium polyacrylate crystals, red liquid coloring, and eucalyptus, jasmine, peppermint, and rose scents. Tools are also provided: cotton balls, 5 empty vials, 2 stirring sticks, a dish, a syringe, a perfume bottle, tweezers, a measuring cup, a small plastic spoon, and sticky labels, which all fit inside a pink tray. The fragrances smell amazing, and make wonderful gifts for female relatives and friends. This kit is very fun, and I would definitely recommend it! NOTE: You might want to make the perfumes on a work bench or plastic table cover, as the scents may spill and stain."

Chemistry is more fun when it bubbles and blows! Been disappointed in the past by sets similar to this, but not this time. Comes with very clearly real scientist doing real dangerous science safety glasses. And some very practical gloves. My 7-yr-old enjoyed handing acid (citric) and alkaline, and then seeing reactions that look like hot lava. Clearly, a lot of thought has gone into the design of the set. It's smart, and engaging, and fun. I learnt several cool facts, and my son had fun while learning experimental safety. He used pH paper and pipettes and handed acid and watched red lave met yellow lava. Our 4-yr-old was standing on a stool watching the 'big boy' stuff in awe, and extracted a promise that he would get his own set when he was 7. Follow the instuctions advice to do this next to a sink, you need water and somewhere to wash up the (eventually) dormant volcano. Contains plenty of materials to keep making colored lava. Clear fun instructions. Everything goes back in the box to have another go next week. Hope this review helps you.

My daughter is 10 and she rarely meets up with a crafting set she doesn't like. We got very into soaps one Christmas after I cleaned our local Hobby Lobby out of all their soap making supplied and created a kit for her to make soap with. We use the easy-peasy way of making soap by melting the glycerin in a microwave and stirring in the colors and scents and putting the soap into molds. They usually turn out great, but occasionally will get a white glaze over some of them. But we had never used some of the materials in this kit. Being able to make the foams and butter creams has added a whole new dimension to our soap-making Saturdays! She loves it and now we can make professional level soaps for her teachers and friends! I wasn't expecting this kit to do as much as it does and hopefully we will be able to take our new-found knowledge to make our soaps even better in the future. Definitely a five star kit, especially at this price!

My kids liked making soap. We really like science kits. I would much prefer them doing something than watching something. Science is such an important subject, and I really like that they can learn about it. It is nice because they can spend the time doing it. They are excited when they make something themselves. They love to make new discoveries. This is a great activity for a rainy day or a day when your child is sick or when you are just stuck at home. It is a good way to keep a child busy. I thought it was age appropriate. It wasn’t too hard. The children really liked how it turned out. I feel like this is good for child development. It kept my children's interest. It would also make a nice gift. I would recommend it.
